a few days with a jailbreak iPhone & my thoughts
with the original iPhone it was kinda cool to jailbreak the iPhone. No apps. Then they released an App Store. And then there was jailbreak because the phone didn't butter your toast from factory. Then 3.0 hit and the iPhone was almost a perfect phone. Almost why? well the first reason is not really Apple's fault. Tethering. The iPhone has did just not on the AT&T Network. The second issue is that if you have a really cool Radio Streaming app you want to listen to but you can't do something else on the iPhone while you use that app. Yeah if this annoys you then maybe Jailbreak is for you. You may ask why I don't talk about Apple's control of what get's released and all that. Well it truly doesn't matter to me that much. And I believe apple is working to improve this process. A reason that doesn't exist anymore is VOIP over 3g as AT&T recently allowed this. But still waiting for updates on Skype, etc. To sum up my reasons for Jailbreaking. Internet Conection for my laptop if I need to a quick solution and being able to run apps like Pandora while I Tweet. (i only have 3 apps set using Backgrounder, which is the app that allows you to run apps on the Background) That's my list in a nutshell since I found everything else a little too much, and it breaks away from the simplicity of the iPhone. I really don't need to change the appearance of the UI, just like i was never attracted to theming OSX with things like ShapeShifter (although I did try it). There are some hacks I won't mention that are useful too but not enought to jailbreak. Now my experience with a jailbroken 3GS with 3.1.2. Must say Jailbreaking has much improved from past days. althought it will never be as easy as Jailbreakme.com And obviously I don't pirate iPhoen apps which seems to be a popular reason to jailbreak. In a way to screw small developers. Cause I'm sure all those big names like EA, etc don't care enough about people cracking their apps, it's the small dev that suffers. Also last time i Jailbreaked an iPhone I quickly restore to factory settings because Backgrounder was not in a useful state. But I must say currently the app works pretty good from what I tested so far. And for me is enough reason to Jailbreak. So I will be jailbreaked for a while, and let's see what happens. I'm sure Apple has some awesome things in store for 2010.
