An Apple Geek with a Nexus S. (Android)

If you read the subject you may think WTF. And I can understand that, specially when my house has a Media Ecosystem built around Apple devices and iTunes.

Then i saw the opportunity and got a White Nexus S Unlocked with AT&T 3G Bands. After using it for two weeks all I can say is the battery life doesn't come close to my iPhone 4, and I miss the iOS UI. I want to make something else clear, I have 0 issues with Apple's closed system, none at all. Then people ask me why are you moving to Android. I been an iPhone user for far too long, I needed a change and well I like google services and for the most part they work really well with android.

After almost going back to the iPhone I decided to try a couple of things to improve it, and will update to let you all know how it goes. Will give it until next week (if you see me with an iPhone on Monday it doesn't count [WWDC]). Also the Super AMOLED Screen is stunning, but the Retina Display on the iPhone feels better on my eyes at least. Anyways posted a crappy pic, will promess to update with better pictures. Also if you have any specific questions about the differences between an iPhone 4 and a Nexus S leave me a comment and I will answer them.

Cheers,Ed.

to stay in at&t or not...

Sprint-vs-atnt-tmobile1-550x180

To some of you it has been obvious from reading my messages online that I been looking into Android and even another carrier besides AT&T for the future. This doesn't have to do with me disliking AT&T. But More with their limitation of Data and such. Another issue and this is iPhone specific is that in Puerto Rico they don't insure the iPhones, you have your Apple 1YR warranty and that's it. Which hasn't been an issue before but for example my previous iPhone 3GS had an issue with a button but luckily it was replaced before the warranty expired. If that had happened after warranty expired I would had been in a real pickle, luckily it didn't come to that. To put it lightly if you have an iPhone in Puerto Rico, you're just waiting to be screwed. Some might say you just need to take care of your phone more, but everyone that knows me, knows that i take care of these devices more than anything.

So with the possible buy of TMo by AT&T I would be considering Sprint as a future service provider. I'm not happy at their current lack of 4G on the island, but that could soon change in the future, and the plans being offered to me are good offers. There is also the issue with the Data, if i want to tether my iPhone I have to lose my Unlimited plan which is something I find totally unfair and Sprint offers Unlimited Data which indeed does lure me. With that being said i'm being reluctant to leave AT&T because they're currently offering HSPA+(Fake 4G) which is somewhat better than the 3G speeds I'm getting now with the iPhone 4 and if i get a 4G device it may be an improvement. The other issue is that my wife loves her iPhone. She is addicted to GodFinger, and there is none of that on Android yet. So i may make the change first and lure her in or just get an at&t android phone, root it, and leave her on iPhone.

My big issue with iPhone always comes back to Insurance and Warranty (at least here in Puerto Rico). There is a tendency with iPhone buttons to give out with issue. It has happened to me and now is happening to my wife's iPhone, which at&t won't replace unless it gets worse and it may be out of warranty by then. And android phones are getting better and I will keep looking at the alternative. This will be something that will be on going for me until I decide what to do...

If you have any tips or ideas let me know.

Final Fantasy I and II coming to iPhone and iPod touch

by Chris Rawson (RSS feed) on Jan 21st 2010 at 8:00AM

Just announced at Square Enix's Facebook page: Final Fantasy I and II are coming to an App Store near you. The nearly 20-year-old games have been remastered and re-released a number of times, with versions appearing for just about every platform invented thus far, so it was only a matter of time before they made their way to the iPhone and iPod touch.

Release date and pricing are both TBA, and nothing official has been announced on Square Enix's official site as of yet, but in the meantime, they've posted screenshots, and they look quite excellent. With Final Fantasy XIII coming out for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in March, going all the way back to the long-running series' beginning on the iPhone sounds like a really fun way to pass the next couple of months.

I WANT THIS NOW!

a few days with a jailbreak iPhone & my thoughts

with the original iPhone it was kinda cool to jailbreak the iPhone. No apps. Then they released an App Store. And then there was jailbreak because the phone didn't butter your toast from factory. Then 3.0 hit and the iPhone was almost a perfect phone. Almost why? well the first reason is not really Apple's fault. Tethering. The iPhone has did just not on the AT&T Network. The second issue is that if you have a really cool Radio Streaming app you want to listen to but you can't do something else on the iPhone while you use that app. Yeah if this annoys you then maybe Jailbreak is for you.

You may ask why I don't talk about Apple's control of what get's released and all that. Well it truly doesn't matter to me that much. And I believe apple is working to improve this process. A reason that doesn't exist anymore is VOIP over 3g as AT&T recently allowed this. But still waiting for updates on Skype, etc.

To sum up my reasons for Jailbreaking. Internet Conection for my laptop if I need to a quick solution and being able to run apps like Pandora while I Tweet. (i only have 3 apps set using Backgrounder, which is the app that allows you to run apps on the Background) That's my list in a nutshell since I found everything else a little too much, and it breaks away from the simplicity of the iPhone. I really don't need to change the appearance of the UI, just like i was never attracted to theming OSX with things like ShapeShifter (although I did try it). There are some hacks I won't mention that are useful too but not enought to jailbreak.

Now my experience with a jailbroken 3GS with 3.1.2. Must say Jailbreaking has much improved from past days. althought it will never be as easy as Jailbreakme.com

And obviously I don't pirate iPhoen apps which seems to be a popular reason to jailbreak. In a way to screw small developers. Cause I'm sure all those big names like EA, etc don't care enough about people cracking their apps, it's the small dev that suffers.

Also last time i Jailbreaked an iPhone I quickly restore to factory settings because Backgrounder was not in a useful state. But I must say currently the app works pretty good from what I tested so far. And for me is enough reason to Jailbreak. So I will be jailbreaked for a while, and let's see what happens. I'm sure Apple has some awesome things in store for 2010.
